Excellent! Keep these articles coming.
Wading through the autotools doco is good, but your primer is simple and straightforward and has demystified autotools somewhat for me already. I feel more confident to tackle the heavier concepts involved.

Thanks for the comment, Army of Z. I'm hoping to get the next article out within the next week.
I hope you didn't get emailed by the two spam comments that were posted here; my apologies if you did. My comment captcha was only set to kick in after seven days, and they slipped through while I wasn't looking. I've set it to permanently on, now. Cheers, Paul
Hi Paul,
The above "Hello world" example uses a syntax that have been obsoleted several years ago. (The need to call AC_PROG_INSTALL when using Automake has been removed in 1996, the syntax you use for AC_INIT and AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE has been deprecated in 2002). For an up-to-date Hello World I strongly encourage you to read the introductory chapter of the Automake Manual : http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#Hello-World
Thanks for pointing that out, Alexandre. I have now updated the tutorial.
Thanks for a super-simple tutorial! Autotools has always made my brain hurt, but after reading this, I get it. Suddenly it makes sense!
