I've been playing around with distributed version control systems like Mercurial and Git, recently, and while they work well, I'll freely admit that I've been having a bit of trouble seeing the advantage of using them rather than a centralised model such as that used by Subversion. Fortunately InfoQ have come to the rescue, with a detailed guide to distributed VCS systems, including a good comparision of the leading three open source systems.

Merging and branching in Subversion 1.5

Subversion, the version control system that is intended to be a replacement for the ageing CVS, will have improved merging and branching functions in its upcoming 1.5 release (currently available as a beta). Javaworld have published a new tutorial specifically examining Subversion's new merging and branching features.
